TYE REAL GLASGOW STANDS UP

PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE

RELEASE WORKERS CITY NOT CULTURE CITY

A 1990 event with a difference takes place on May Day Tuesday 1st May in the Winter Gardens, Peoples Palace Glasgow Green. It has nothing to do with the official City of Culture year.

It's the first Workers City Night which will celebrate the working class of Glasgow, their struggles and achievements. It will feature a reading from a new play "The Last Threads" by Ann Kerr about the women weavers in Glasgow's last mill in Bridgeton.

Alien Arts Theatre company will read from Ann Kerr's new book to be published on May Day by Clydeside Press,

Other struggles of Glasgow workers and the destruction of Clydeside industries will be highlighted in song by Gordeanna McCulloch and Clutha.

There will be poetry readings by Jack Withers and Freddie Anderson among others and the Night will be introduced by Farquhar McLay, editor of the popular "Workers City" book.

One of the organisers, Brendan McLaughlin said

" We are expecting working class people from Glasgow's housing schemes and other parts of the city to attend, particularly those campaiming against the poll tax.

It is especially significant that this first Workers City Night is being held on May Day 1990, the 100th anniversary of the first May Day in Chicago, which made 1st May the international workers' day. Let

2 The event is being organised by the people who protested at the opening of ‘Glasgow's Glasgow’ on 12th April. As well as condemning the whole Culture City trip as'a jamboree forthe bourgeoisie! they are particularly opposed to people having to pay £4 each for entry to an exhibition about Glasgow's history including items which until now have been freely available at

District museums and galleries.

In contrast, the Workers City May Day event is free and tickets can be got from the Scotia Bar, Clydeside Press, 37 High St and from the Peoples Palace itself. =ND
