The earliest mention of the name occurs in the “Anglo-Saxon Chronicle,” a collection of the annals of public events, compiled at various dates. In some of the MSS. of the A. S. Chronicle the name is spelt Hreopan-diin, apparently signifying ‘‘ Hreopa’s down, ’ i.e., Hreopa’s hill-fort, Hreopa being the name of some A. S. warrior, not otherwise known.
The three entries in the A. S. Chronicle, in which Repton is mentioned, appear in MS. as follows :
1. “ A.D. 755. Thy ilcan geare mon ofslog ^thelbald Miercna “ cyning on Seccan-dune, and his lie lith on Hreopa-dune. ”
In the same year was slain ^thelbald, king of the Mercians, at Seckington (^^ arwicks.), and his body lies at Repton.
2. “ A.D. 874. Her for se here from Lindesse to Hreope-dune, “and threr winter-setl nam. ”
In this year the invading army went from Lindsey (Lines.) to Repton, and there took up their winter-quarters.
3. “.\.D. 875. Her for se here from Hreope-dune.”
In this year the invading army departed from Repton.
The various readings give the name as follows : — i. Hreopa A; Hreopan BCD; Reopan E. 2. Hreope ABCE ; Hreopen D.
Here Hreopen and Reopan are later spellings of Hreopan, and Hreope of Hreopa; which practically gives five examples of Hreopan, and five of Hreopa. The former, being the fuller form, may be preferred.
The only other trace of the name Hreopa is in the tribal name Hrepingas, mentioned in (the late) MS. E. under the year 675, in the Peterborough charter there quoted. This may well be a late spelling of Hreopingas, i.e., the sons (or family) of Hreopa. This tribal name is preserved in the modern Repington, which, according to Plummer, is the name of a hundred.
It is proper to note, on the other hand, that Hreopa is the older

We also find Hrypadun, apparently Repton, in the index to Kemble’s Charters.
The above note has been contributed by the Rev. W. Skeat, Litt. D., Ang-lo-Saxon Professor in the University of Cambridg-e. whose Chair was endowed by Dr. Joseph Bosworth, O.R. (Spp

The School was founded in 155^ in accordance with the will of
Sir John Port, of Etwall, which provided for the endowment of
“ A Grammar School in Etwall or Repton,” to be kept bv ‘‘ A
Priest well learned and gfraduafe,” assisted ‘‘by an Usher.”
The Schoolmaster and Usher were to recei^'e respectivelv Twenty
Pounds and Ten Pounds as their annual salary ‘‘ for their travail

in keeping- the School.
Provision was also made for ‘‘ a substantial School House, tog^ether with convenient chambers and lodg-ing-s for the School- master and lusher.” The building-s adopted for this purpose included, for many years, only what is now known as The Prior\ . which formed the School and the offici.al residence of the Master and the. Senior Usher till the year 1768, when the then Head- master, curiously enoug-h Prior bv name, moved into Tlie Hall, leaving^ the Priory houses for the two Ushers, known in later years as the Second and Third Masters.
It may here be noted that the present H.M. is not the first whom Priory has sent to Hall 1
Erom the fact that the School was first established in these building^s it was known as ‘‘ Repton Priory School,” as is shewn bv the following- records: — Henslowe, E.P. (p. 74I is entered in the regfister of Jesus Coll., Camb., as coiping^ from ‘‘Repton Priory School ”; Mounsev, G.W. (p. iitI, is similarlv described in the regfister of Trin. Coll.
Moreover, the name ‘‘Priory” was transferred to the Hall which retained the borrowed title as late as Dr. Peile’s time.
The report of the Wildbore brothers (p. 91) for the half-year

ending- Midsummer, 1S33, written in full by Mr. Macaulay and signed by him, is dated from “ Repton Priory,” and Whitehead, P.E.W. p. 107), writes that he was ” at The Priory or Old Hall under Dr. Peile. ” Also Macaulay, J.H.- (p. loi), referring to the above-mentioned School report, says ‘‘.I can satisfactorily answer your enquiry about ' Priory’ and ‘ Hall.’ All the buildings, including what are now called The Hall and The Priory, were then, and indeed always in Dr. Peile’s time, called ‘The Priory.’ .All letters came, as 1 distinctly recollect, to the Headmaster’s house, addressed ‘ The Priory. ’ This accounts for my uncle dating his letter from ‘The Priory.’ ”
In the year 1621 King James granted to the School a special Charter, the management of the estates being entrusted to a Corporation consisting of ‘•‘ The Master of Etwall - Hospital, The Schoolmaster of Repton, Ushers, Poor Men (of the Hospital) and Poor Scholars.” Under this charter the number of Ushers was doubled, the special duty of the First Usher was ” to teach grammar,” of the Second Usher ” to teach to write, cyphers, and cast accompt. ” It seems probable that at one time the Second Usher presided in the schoolroom known to many O.R.s as ‘‘ The Writing School,” the same with which so many of us associate affectionate memories of sundry incidents, whether of sunshine or storm, under the kindly, if stern, rule of him, after whom the room was known as ‘‘Johnson’s Schoolroom.”
This ancient building was one of the old landmarks removed to make way for the Memorial Hall.
It does not appear from the Charter what share the Poor Scholars (the original Foundation Scholars) took in the duties of the Corporation, but the acting members used to meet for the transaction of business in ” The Audit Room,” in The Priory, the same room which was the Lower Fifth Room for so many years.
In those days the Audit Chest, now in the School Library, was kept in the Audit Room, and was the depository of Corporation papers, &c. The three keys of the chest were in the custody respectively of the Master of the Hospital, the Master of the School, and the senior inmate of the Hospital, the vote of the last named being equal at board meetings to that of either of the

former. On one occasion (the present Master of the Hospital tells me the date was October 17th, 1866) the representative of the old men carried his view of the question under discussion by refusing" the use of his key of the chest until his amendment had been adopted !
In 1874, after an enquiry by the Charity Commissioners, the present system of government by a more generally representative body was established.
The School Buildings and Boarding Houses were all inside the Arch till the year 1857, soon after which date commenced those lively contests on the old football field by the Trent, doubtless well remembered by O.R.s of the Sixties, when at first the game was “ Hall v. Houses,” and later, as the Houses outside the Arch grew stronger, the notice on the old oaken door at the entrance of ” The Big School ” changed to ‘‘ Inside v. Outside.” In those now antediluvian matches the teams did not consist of XL or XV., but of as many boys as could be collected by the respective captains.
The year 1857 also brought the School to the 300th anniversary of her Foundation. An account of the celebration of that interest- ing event, of which the Chapel is the standing memorial, may be read in the little volume published by Dr. Pears, and entitled ‘‘The Book of the Repton Tercentenary.”
And now we are fast approaching the completion of another 50 years in the history of our School ; let some younger pen record, in the next edition of the Register, the many-sided progress and expansion of the old School during the half-century since she ceased to be confined by the old ” Abbey Wall,” older than herself, older even than the Priory.
^c^oof (Kegtefere.
Though the School was founded in 1557, and entries appear in this edition of the Register under the years 1564 and 1565, there is no entry in the original manuscript of earlier date than 1675, the date of the list quoted on pp. 29-34.
The next entries in the manuscript form the list under date
REPTON, THE SCHOOL, AND THE SCHOOL REGISTERS. xi
1714, quoted on pp. 41-45, which is followed by the names under date 1771, recorded in print on pp. 51-56, as far as the brothers named Greaves.
Mr. Hipkins has told us in his Preface how he was enabled to fill, to some extent, some of the gaps not accounted for in these lists, and the present Editor, acting on the advice of Dr. Peile, O.R., the Master of Christ’s College, spent a week over some of the College Registers in Cambridge, a work which was rewarded by the discovery of 60 entries of Reptonians, whose names have not previously appeared in any list of O.R.s; 40 of these are of earlier date than our own first entries of 1675. Probably a more extended search at Cambridge and a similar examination of the Oxford Registers would produce equally satisfactory results.
No Headmaster, except the one named in the heading of the lists of 1714, is mentioned in the old Register till the arrival of Dr. Sleath in the year 1800. His record is the next after the three lists above mentioned. He begins his list with the names of some few boys who had entered under the previous Master. Unfortunately, the record he has left of his own pupils is sadly incomplete, e.g., the record of the year 1804 contains but eight names. The entries seem to have been made at various times, compiled probably from mere memoranda or old lists, several names are repeated, and not a few are entered without regard to date of admission. It really looks as if the good Doctor had carried off the Register with him to Etwall, and had there filled in his period at his leisure.
His successor, Mr. Macaulay, left no list of admissions in his time; probably because the Register was not in evidence upon his arrival.
Can any O.R. say when and where the Register was first discovered after that date?
The present record of entries under Mr. Macaulay has been compiled chiefly from old School lists of the period. The oldest printed list extant is that for the half-year ending Christmas, 1832, the first published by Macaulay, which contains the names of 37 boys, one of whom, Peter Ma. , is still living.
Xll
REPTON, THE SCHOOL, AND THE SCHOOL REGISTERS.
Of these lists 13 exist, some being duplicate copies, which, together with 20 lists of Dr. Peile’s time, are now in the School Library.
Dr. Peile commenced his register with a useful list of 35 boys then in the School, giving the dates of their admission under his predecessor.
After him arose Repton’s “Modern Founder,” Dr. Pears. His first half-year’s list, dated Christmas, 1854, contains the names of only 48 boys, and the whole resident teaching staff then consisted of the three Foundation Masters; but before he resigned he was able to enter in his latest four or five lists the names of as many as 260 boys.
From the year 1841 the Registers have been kept continuously and with more detail than previously, but, if the printed editions of Repton’s Register are to contain anything like satisfactory records of her sons, an official Registrar should be appointed (one of the Assistant A'lasters, if possible) to keep record of such items as Entrance Scholarships, &c., membership of the Cricket, Football and Shooting Teams, University Honours and Distinc- tions gained in later life. The Registrar should also keep a separate official Address Book, and should keel? it ivcll up to date.
I am glad to know that the present Headmaster has some such scheme under consideration.

Edited by Rev. F. C. Hipkins, 1895.
During the compilation of this Register the Editor has frequently been asked the question, “ Where do you get the names from? ” As this question may occur to others, a few words as to the authorities consulted and sources of information may be in- teresting.
In the keeping of the Headmaster of Repton School there is an old Register book containing a list of names from 1675 1882. These names have been copied verbatim et literatim. L nfortunately, as will be seen, there are many breaks in the list.
These breaks have been filled up, to a certain extent, by names found in many ways.
(1) An article called “Minute Book of the Wirksworth Classis,’’ published in the “ Journal of the Derbyshire Archaeological and Natural History Society,” Vol. IT, 1880, by Dr. J. Charles Cox (O.R.), supplied information about many in the seventeenth century.
(2) The Charter, granted by James I., named “ the first Foure Poore Schollars. ”
(3) ^ list of witnesses in a chancery suit Ixetween the Master of Repton School, etc., and Gilbert Thacker and others, named eleven O.R.s, who appeared as witnesses at the trial.
(4) Dr. Peile (O.R.), Master of Christ’s College, and Dr. Sandys (O.R.), Fellow of St. John’s College, and Public Orator, Cambridge, have, most kindly, made extracts from their College Registers of Reptonians who were members of their colleges.
(5) School lists, printed during the Headmastership of Mr. Macaulay (1832-40) (presented to the School by H. Temple Pears (O.R.), supplemented by information obtained from and by the Right Hon. George Denman and Canon Macaulay, who were at School during that period, when no Register was kept.
(6) Names cut or written on the school walls, etc.

(7) University Honours, Deg-rees, Addresses, in “ Alumni Oxonienses ” (Foster), “ Graduati Cantabrigienses ” (Crockford).
Many O.R.s and others have supplied much valuable informa- tion, without which the Register would have been merely a list of names and dates.
In addition to those mentioned above, the Editor begs to return his most grateful thanks to the Headmaser (the Rev. W. M. Furneaux), the Rev. G. P. Clucas, H. H. Bemrose, Esq., W. H. Francis, Esq. (O.R.), J. Tilley, Esq., Author of “The Old Halls, Manors, and Families of Derbyshire;’’ and many others, who, by their kind advice and assistance, have helped him in his arduous but exceedingly pleasant task.

Sir John was married twice, first to Elizabeth, daughter of .Sir Thomas Gifford, of Chilllngton, in the County of Stafford, .secondly to Dorothy, daughter of Anthony Fitzherbert. By his first wife he had five children, two boys, Walter and Thomas, both of whom died young, and three daughters, Elizabeth, Dorothy, and Margaret.

HISTORICAL INTRODUCTION.
Elizabeth married Sir Thomas Gerard, of Bryn, co. Lancaster; Dorothy married Georg-e Hasting-s, Earl of Himting;don ; Marg-aret married Sir Thomas Stanhope, of Shelford, co. Nottingham, from whom the present hereditary Governors of Repton School, Lord Gerard, the Earl of Loudoun, and the Earl of Carnarvon, trace their descent.
On the north side of the Church at Etwall was built “ an Alms-House for six of the poorest of Etwall Parish.” This almshouse fell into decay, so in i68i the present hospital was erected. It consists of sixteen sets of apartments, built on three sides of a square ; the fourth side is open to, and bounded by the churchyard wall.
The following inscription is fixed in the centre of the north side : —
” M . S.
“ S'" John Port, Knight, son to S'" John Port, one of the Justices of the Court of King’s Bench, haueing by his last Will left an Estate for the Erection and Endowment of a Free Schole at Repton and an Hospital in this place, departed this Life June VI. MDLVH. the which Foundations haueing been accordinglv established, this Hospitall through length of time falling to decay, was rebuilt, the Sallary’s increased, the Alms Men augmented from VI. to XI 1. The Right Honourable Theophilus Earle of Huntingdon, the Right Honourable Philip Earle of Chesterfield, and S'" William Gerrard, Baronet, Heires Generali to the Founder, being Governors. MDCLXXXI.”
Sir John Port’s executors established the School at Repton rather than at Etwall, because they found there “ one large great and high house,” all that remained of the ancient Priory, well adapted to the purpose. By an indenture, dated 12th June, 1557, ‘‘ Gilbert Thacker, in consideration of los. , bargained and
sold to Richard Harpur serjeant-at-law, John Harker, and Simon Starkey, three of the executors, one large great and high house, near the kitchen of the same Gilbert Thacker, in Repton, com- monly called the Ferlngre, with the ground and soil whereon the same was erected and builded, with the court or void-room adjoining to and upon the end of the said house, and between

the said house and the said kitchen, upon which the school-master’s lodg'ing's were then newly erected, tog'ether with all the rooms, both above and beneath, of the same long house, and also all the paths and ways coming or leading to the same or any of them. The said Gilbert, also, for the consideration aforesaid, bargained and sold to the said Richard, John, and Simon, one large void-room or parcel of ground upon the east part, adjoining to the side of the said great long house, which void-room and parcel of ground lately was called the Cloyster, and one other room thereto adjoining, latelv called the Fratrye, as the same were then inclosed with a new wall ; to the intent that the same should be a schoolhouse, and so used from time to time thereafter.”
Thus was Repton School founded by Sir John Port in the year 1557. As we have seen. Sir William Perryn, Bachelor of Divinity, was the first schoolmaster nominated by Sir John in his will.
The management of the School continued for a time under the direction of Sir John’s executors, but gradually it fell into the hands of the Harpur family. In the year 1621 an agreement was made, by Sir John Harpur on the one part, and the Earl of Huntingdon, Lord Stanhope, and Sir Thomas Gerard, Bart., on the other, the three several descendants of Sir John Porte’s three daughters, by which the management, after the death of Sir John Harpur, was conveyed to the rightful heirs of the founder.
In 1622, by petition of the coheirs, James I. granted, by Royal Letters Patent, a Charter of Incorporation by the style and title of ‘‘the Master of Etwall Hospital, School Master of Repton, Ushers, Poor Men, and Poor Scholars.” The coheirs ‘‘of their friend- liness and good will to the said Sir John Harpur, son of Richard, their Kinsman,” petitioned that he should have the election and appointment of three of the twelve poor men, and one of the foui' poor scholars ordained by the Charter, so the Harpurs (Harpur- Crewes since 1808) were appointed, and have been numbered among the hereditary Governors from that time.
In 1865, F. O. Martin, Esq., Inspector of Charities, made a report to the Charity Commissioners ‘‘ in the matter of Sir John Port’s Hospital in Etwall and School in Repton,” which report was ordered by the House of Commons to be printed on the 13th

HISTORICAL INTRODUCTIOK.
May, 1867. Founded on the report, a draft scheme for the manag-ement was published in January, 1873, by the Endowed Schools Commission. From that date all lands, etc., have been vested in the Charity Commissioners’ official trustee.
■A new Governingf Body was appointed, consisting of an ex-officio Governor (the Lord-Lieutenant of the County of Derby for the time being), four hereditary Governors, five nominated Governors, one nominated by the members of Parliament for the various divisions of the county of Derby, one by the magistrates for the county of Derby in Quarter Sessions, one by the Hebdo- madal Council of the University of Oxford, one by the Council of the Senate of the L^niversity of Cambridge, one of the Head Master and Assistant Masters of Repton School, and five co- optative Governors.

(preface.
IT was with no light heart that, at the request of the O.R. Society, I undertook the preparation of this new edition of the Register. I was associated with my late husband in the compilation of the previous edition in 1905, I knew how great the difficulties were of ensuring completeness and accuracy in detail, and I knew further how impossible success was to achieve without the fullest assistance from all those who were interested in the School, both past and present, but I was assured, and that assurance has been in the fullest manner redeemed, that the assistance which was given to my husband would also be extended to me ; it has been so extended, and whatever faults there may be in this book — and there are faults — none are due to any lack of sympathetic assistance on the part of present and past Reptonians. My husband was a very keen Reptonian, and I have been treated by all concerned as if I were, as I hope I am, a keen Reptonian by adoption.
The first edition of the Repton Register was the work of the Rev. F. C. Hipkins, and was published in 1895. My husband’s edition was brought out ten years later, in 1905, and this issue will be the third. It is comparatively easy to deal with Reptonians who have joined the School in recent years, but the task of tracing some O.R.’s has been most difficult. I have fortunately been able to complete the records of more than 150 O.R.’s whose entries were unavoidably left incomplete in the edition of 1905, and each on? of these records completed must, I think, add value to the book as a work of reference. I shall be very grateful to any of my readers who can supply me with any information which would enable me to trace those O.R.’s whose records are still incomplete.
The School records illustrate, to one who closely studies them, very interesting evidence of hereditary succession; sons succeed fathers, and their sons succeed them. Family associations with the School are maintained, and at this moment nearly one-tenth of the boys in the School are sons of O.R.’s.
VI.
PREFACE.
I have already said that my task would have been hopeless without assistance, and I hope to be allowed now to acknowledge the full measure in which that assistance has been given to me. To my enquiries by correspondence, often I fear voluminous and pressing, O.R.’s at home and abroad have given most careful attention and have, moreover, cheered me by kindly encourage- ment. Help in special measure has, among many others, been granted to me by the Rev. Professor Sanday, Dr. Sandys, and Mr. H. C. Fanshawe, C.S.I., who will, I hope, accept this acknowledg- ment of my obligations to them. Mr. A. W. S. Cochrane has placed not only myself but the whole body of O.R.’s under a special obligation by preparing a complete list of Hereditary Governors, a list to which his authority as Rouge Croix gives particular value.
Throughout the whole preparation of the book Mr. Vassall has acted as my adviser and referee, he has grudged neither time nor trouble ; he has helped me in numberless details and has in particular worked out for me the list of Masters, which is far more complete and accurate than any which has yet appeared.
There are mistakes and omissions in the book ; there must be in a Register which seeks to cover the records of a School which has flourished for more than 350 years, but I have done my utmost to investigate every detail, and to make the records as near complete as it was possible for me to do. Where I have failed it has not been through any lack of interest on my part either in the Register itself or in the School of which it is the mirror. May I once more thank all O.R.’s most heartily and ask them to deal tenderly with my deficiencies.
The Oaks, Deal,
December, 1910.

HEADMASTERS OE REPTON SCHOOL.
of ^cBoof.
Under the Will of Sir John Port.
Sir John Port in his Will, made 9 March, 1556/7, nominated his late Chaplain, William Perryn, B.D., Ox., to be the first Scole Master, “ if he be lyvinge,” but he had been made Prior of the Dominican or Black Friars, for whom Mary Tudor refounded St. Bartholomew’s, Smithfield, at Easter, 1556, and he was buried there on August 22, 1558.
The Priory was conveyed to the executors of Sir John Port by deed of June 12, 1559, and the names of the first six Masters were written, presumably by the last of the six, on the upper part of the wall of the Audit Room, which used to be the Master’s study.
“ Me Wighhtman, Steward, Starkey, Moreton literatus, Radcliff et Pollard, primi tenuere magistri.

The dates of the earlier Masters and Ushers are only appro.ximately correct. They are the result of researches made in the Parish Church Registers and amongst the old documents in the Audit Chest in the School Library and elsewhere, by A. F. Leach, assisted by H. Vassall.
